Anthropocene Monsters and Wonders
Potatoes, Collaboration and Global Connections in a Ruined Landscape in Denmark

Focusing on the processing of potatoes into complex starch products at a facility in Jutland in Western Denmark, this article explores forms of life on heavily industrialized grounds. By conducting grounded cultural analysis in a particular man-made landscape, we show that Danish potatoes have everything to do with fruit gum, brown coal extraction, red deer, Asian instant noodles, parmesan cheese and the making of new connections in the world. By looking at such connections in a landscape thoroughly defined by resource extraction, we discuss possibilities of co-existence for different species and point to both monstrous and wondrous effects of industrial activity. We engage the notion of the Anthropocene to investigate the man-made brown coal landscape as a complex ecology constituted by both intentional and runaway features.
