Embedded Routines and Magical Artefacts
Lifestyle Changes in Everyday Life

Today, lifestyle and lifestyle changes are important measures in public health. Peoples’ lifestyles and unhealthy habits are considered one of the main reasons for overweight, disease and premature death as well as raising healthcare expenditures. In Denmark health is a private as well as a public matter and since the municipality reform in 2007 it is primarily the municipalities that are responsible for health promotion and health prevention. In the present article, I focus on one of these public health interventions – a lifestyle course for overweight men, organized by a municipality in the Greater Copenhagen area. I discuss how the participants go about changing their often unreflective habits in an everyday life, consisting of more than just the wish for a healthier life. And what type of methods they are using in this process of transformation. In particular, I show how a variety of different artefacts and advice become meaningful in the process of change; because the participants use them in a reflexive process of formation, these artefacts help the participants gain control of their ‘unhealthy’ routines. But they also function as mediators between ideals about a healthier lifestyle and individual experiences and limits. The artefacts help the participants in making health choices. By using the artefacts the participants do not have to reflect upon their choices, which then make it possible for them to maintain and retain healthier routines in a changeable daily day.
