1864 – a usable past in a Danish squadron
The article sheds light on the use of history in a Danish dragoon squadron. Raising the question how and why a soldier, Niels Kjeldsen, from the Second Schleswig War (1864) is used in a present time Danish dragoon squadron – the answer points to processes of heroization within the squadron. Analysis shows that the squadron leaders construct Niels Kjeldsen as a heroic symbol and use him to inspire and discipline the soldiers in the squadron. The conclusions are based on analysis of visual representations, interviews and public speeches.
